Standard Designs

DESIGN FEATURES

The design aspects of each VERDANT house type are the culmination of a series of conscious decisions aimed at maximising the passive potential of the design. They are not a reflection of style based on fashion or whim.

This is why we have developed the system of choosing your house type by determining the street aspect of your land having regard to NORTH. To find your best performing house design go to the images below and double click on the one that represents your situation with respect to the land you own or are considering purchasing.

If you purchase a VERDANT design and build it you are investing in a lifestyle that is sustainable and can act as an exemplar for others to experience.

SENSE OF E NTRY

An appropriate sense of entry is important to the streetscape and from the observer/visitor viewpoint. Too often the garage dominates the approach to a house from the street giving an unfortunate and inhuman dominance which sends the wrong message to the visitor. The entry needs to be obvious and welcoming.

QUALITY OF INTERNAL SPACES

The entry lobby creates an inviting first impression and leads directly to living spaces without having to move through private sections of the house.

A series of varying experiences throughout the house with regard to light quality, scale, and shape and volume create interest and flexibility.

ZONING

All VERDANT house types zone living and sleeping sections of the house separately so that comfort conditions as well as public and private functions can be managed effectively.

INSIDE / OUTSIDE

Each design creates a series of external courtyards associated with internal rooms so that a sense of connection to the outside is ever present in the house. These external courts are placed in various locations around the building so that they provide comfortable external environs that can be used at all times of the year.

CROSS VENTILATION

Living spaces are generally single width rooms that have windows placed on opposite sides so that natural ventilation can be optimised.

The location of windows and their design will capture maximum prevailing breezes in summer and provide passive night cooling.

ROOF PITCH AND ORIENTATION

Mono pitch roofs to living spaces allow the maximum penetration of winter sun for collection in floors and walls of high thermal mass. This reduces the need for winter heating and consequently reduces energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.

North facing roofs also provide optimal locations for placing photovoltaic arrays if owners choose to explore the use of solar energy production.

SLOPING CEILINGS

Sloping ceilings, in connection with high level windows and sweep fans, assist in creating convection currents that purge hot air in summer to all living spaces.

By reducing ambient internal temperatures in summer the need for air conditioning is reduced thus reducing energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions.
